I met him on the sidewalk, in a busy city street,
I ne'er before had seen him, tho 'twas fine for us to meet.
For he wore a blue-lodge button, just the compass and the square,
And I stopped at once to greet him, as I saw him standing there.
I found he was a
stranger, and he did not know his way;
And the crowds were rushing by him with their burdens of the day.
For he wore a blue-lodge button, just the compass and the square,
And was mighty glad to see me, when I stopped to greet him there.
So I waited just a
moment, and I answered his request,
With the very information that would suit his case the best.
For he wore a blue-lodge button, just the compass and the square,
But at once it made us brothers, when I found him standing there.
And were happier
for the meeting, and I seemed to hear him say,
And we happier for the meeting, I seemed to hear him say,
'Twas because I wore the button, just the compass and the square,
And with all my heart I love it, for it serves me everywhere.
